Final Test match begins in the early hours of Thursday morning in Dharamsala, weather permitting. Just one change for England with Wood replacing Robinson. I presume Stokes might bowl a few overs, if necessary, I have a feeling he might be needed.
Team: Crawley, Duckett, Pope, Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Foakes, Hartley, Wood, Bashir, Anderson.
First milestone will be YJB taking the field for his 100th Test match. I hope it's one to remember and that he makes a significant contribution.
Anderson still needs a couple of wickets for his 700. He should get there this match I would think if it's more a seamers wicket, I'm sure he'll get a few more Tests in England next year if not.

Well after a solid start and a very poor afternoon at least we got to tea with a couple of wickets still in tact.
I haven't seen any but have we been duped with all the talk of more chance for the seam bowlers and all 8 wickets going to spin.

'England have plenty to play for with Ashes looming over the horizon GEORGE DOBELL: There's a lot to play for as England go into this apparently dead rubber; this series may have gone, but maybe the journey to the next Ashes is just beginning'
Perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea to leave a 4 years gap between the Ashes, just to let normal cricket breath for a little.

175-3 to 218 all out.
Half the team cannot read Yadav and dance down the wicket and miss and are stumped, or play back and are lbw. Half the team think slogging the way out of trouble in the second session of day 1 is the answer.
Half the team look to have an ok average but if you remove one decent innings the average plummets for the other 8 knocks in the series to date.
But they have all been given a free pass - no pressure on their places, no expectation of them to be consistent as "thats the way we roll",
Stat quirk
Ben Stokes and Ben Foakes have both played 9 innings, both scored 197 runs and both got an average of 21.89....

It's not 'slogging the way out of trouble' it's BAZZBALL

Jaiswal has failed, out for only 57, I suppose it depends on your expectations.
This could make England look very poor indeed if things don't shift their way.

Just watched some rather gruesome highlights of day 1. I might have a bit of a lie in tomorrow as I'm slightly fearful of what the score will be when I do get up.
It did look rather a pleasant place to be though and there seemed to be a good lot in, especially when India were batting.
I'll put a marker down, I usually get up during the lunch break. Anything less than 300 runs on the board, or fewer than 6 wickets left I'll consider a bonus.

go back to bed Newby.....
The only plus was golden arm Stokes taking a wicket with his first ball of the innings/match/series/year..... and Anderson taking one to be one away from 700 but thats looking to be a bit of a challenge to get it with Sarfraz and Padikkal going well

Stokes's England can't even be bothered to make sure they have two quick bowlers ready to take the new ball. Commentators are talking about anything and everything as there's zero tension in the cricket.
Listening more from habit rather than with any hope of a contest breaking out.

I got up just about halfway through the day's play, having stayed up late watching NZ v Oz.
I had a private bet with myself that the scored would be about 260 for five. It was 310 for three. This Sarfaraz is one hell of a player, and now yet another debutant has come to the party.
As I type, Bashir has just got his 3rd wicket, the same man, Padikkal, which brings in Jurel, who looks a terrific bat. 404 for five. Whatever India get, we need to score about 30 more than that, to set then 250 in the 4th innings!

A better session at least and good to see Bashir and Hartley get a few wickets.
I don't want to be unkind, but like the old saying about if you had a big enough number of monkeys, bashing on an equally large number of typewriters they would eventually reproduce the works of Shakespeare. Then under the same odds if you have two bowlers bowling enough balls there's likely to be a good one in there somewhere.
It is a bit unkind looking at it, but it's how I feel about their bowling.
Lead is 255, I wonder what the odds are against England getting a second chance with the ball.

True - although the ball to bowl their left hander from Bashir and the ball from Hartley to bowl Ashwin were top notch.
But you just know that tomorrow when Yadav, Ashwin and Jadeja get the ball in their hands, it will turn more and both ways from Yadav, with the added fear of the straight one from Jadeja and Ashwin to make it more challenging for our batters

Our spinners are halfway there. They bowl a beautiful straight one. All they need now is the variation one that turns.
A bit unfair, I know. These two youngsters look the best bet since my Panesar and my Swann, long ago. Plus the two U19 kids to follow. Laker said it, Benaud said it, Warne said it, Swann says it: SPIN THE BALL HARD.
They rewrote the MCC Coaching Book after Laker had criticised its conservative 'learn to bowl accurately, add spin later' approach.

Blessed relief it's all over. I expect the England camp will be as upbeat as usual and of course Jimmy got his 700th wicket so that's alright.
Well done to him for that though, magnificent effort over the years to remain so focused. Will he let it go now I wonder.

Yes Anderson is remarkable. Glad Root made a decent score. Shame Bairstow didn’t cap his 100th with a few more.
