115/5 India still needing 116. Whatever happens from here it's been a good start to the series and I'm going to stop giving my opinion when it comes to England Test cricket.
Although, with a practice game in India we might have won already!.

If England need any further motivation I'm happy to wade in with my unadulterated nonsense in future Tests. No fee.

I don't think the total England made was shockingly bad for the pitch - at least, I don't expect that Australia, New Zealand etc would have done substantially better. There were a couple of poor shots - Crawley in particular - and they really need to accept that if Pope is ever to reach Test class it won't be at three or in these conditions and get Jennings in, but in essence it was about where you'd expect. Well that aged well

Never in doubt. Will any Indians turn up to watch next week? Will their team turn up?
The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is rapidly fadin'
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'
Bob Dylan Willis would have enjoyed it.

Ha! Four innings matches can obviously be turned round! But not usually like that. Congratulations to all and of course especially to Pope and Hartley.

But for Pope (and indeed himself, with the bat), Hartley would never have got another chance with the ball. Now, sometime down the line, it will (might) come to a choice between Leach and Hartley, and it might well go the the younger man who is better with the bat.
Rehan Ahmed looks the part with the bat too. He got runs against us for Leics last summer, but Fin Bean took his bowling down, big time. Small margins. Luck. But when you get your break, you've got to be good enough to take it.
Wasn't that a fabulous game for cricket? Everything that's great about the 5- and 4-day game. So too the one in Brisbane. I do hope this is not another false dawn for Windies.
Does Graves still think the longer form is rubbish, and no one is interested?

what a turnaround. Preparation and practice clearly overrated and the first innings failures became the 2nd innings heroes.
Not sure the Indians really knew how to chase that sort of total, they did the right things but at the wrong times, leaving it too late to attack and shift the pressure to the opposition.
Fantastic Mr Stokes with the run out and some decent keeping by Foakes but Hartley might just have forced leach back to county cricket next summer

2nd Test starts on Friday and a bit of an injury crisis for India with KL Rahul and Ravi Jadeja joining Kohli, Shami, and Pant on the side lines.
I thought they might recall Cheteshwar Pujara as a steady hand, but obviously his time has past.
They've instead called up 3 of the top 4 scorers from the India A team who recently beat England A by an innings.
Might make things a bit easier for Matthew Fisher and the rest of the A team who play again on Thursday. If he's selected of course.

Two stumpings by a mile plus two close catches in front of the wicket by Pope, these spinners have it easy with so many more ways to take wickets.
The 15 minutes or so very brief highlights were o.k, but an hours edited highlights on one of the terrestrial channels would have been much better.

100 years ago, when Tich Freeman was taking 304 wickets in a season, a lot of them were stumped Ames. Amateurs viewed a spinner as a challenge, to hit him out of the ground, and tailenders used to bat like Siraj, generally.
Modern spinners have benefited from helmeted close catchers, and from DRS.
Against that, are the covered pitches in England, bigger bats, and shorter boundaries. Also seam-friendly conditions, so spinners often never get on to bowl, or even don't get selected. The 'danger area' of the pitch is also policed more closely than formerly.
Swings and roundabouts. This was a great pitch, for cricket.

Two very different players in terms of experience come into the England team for the second test at Visakhapatnam starting tomorrow.
Shoaib Bashir to make his debut in place of the injured Jack Leach and James Anderson comes in for Mark Wood.
Big risk with Bashir of course but I suppose they don't have much choice. I might have gone for Lawrence, to strengthen the batting and try and bamboozle the Indian's with his eccentric bowling style.
Will they pull it off, or will this be one experiment too far! It's interesting at least during the dark days of winter.
