"You batsmen! Just get us 120, and we'll win more than we lose." That was my first club captain. A bowler, obviously. But we rarely could get 120, on that THING that called itself a pitch. Same ground, nowadays, they knock off 250 to win and think it's easy.
My first 1st XI 50 for the club. I think I made 57 of a total of 144. Their heads were down, and we knew we would win. We did win.
As you say, Newby, the f-c equivalent of that club 120 was 200, a score that could be defended on a third-day pitch; even 180, often.
