So now we can see the way ahead. Concentrating on the 50 ODI squad, Malan, Rashid, Ali and Woakes have been dropped. Bairstow, Root and Wood are being rested, Stokes is having his op, and of course Willey has been forced to retire.
ODI squad: Jos Buttler (captain - Lancashire), Rehan Ahmed (Leicestershire), Gus Atkinson (Surrey), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Brydon Carse (Durham), Zak Crawley (Kent), Sam Curran (Surrey), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Tom Hartley (Lancashire), Will Jacks (Surrey), Liam Livingstone (Lancashire), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Phil Salt (Lancashire), Josh Tongue (Nottinghamshire), John Turner (Hampshire)
T20 squad: Jos Buttler (captain - Lancashire), Rehan Ahmed (Leicestershire), Moeen Ali (Warwickshire), Gus Atkinson (Surrey), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Sam Curran (Surrey), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Will Jacks (Surrey), Liam Livingstone (Lancashire), Tymal Mills (Sussex), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Phil Salt (Lancashire), Josh Tongue (Nottinghamshire), Reece Topley (Surrey), John Turner (Hampshire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)
The name that jumps out at me is Sam Curran, from unselectable after the first two WC games, to back and in both squads. What's the inside story there I wonder.

Thanks for the new squads, newby.
Few of the England players 'shone' in the 50 overs-a-side World Cup.
A couple that underperformed (in my opinion)the most (if that's possible) were Livingstone and Butler, with the bat and ball and bat and captaincy, respectively.
I thought they'd both be coming back 'budget' class, not going to the 'windies'. I realise it doesn't always work like that or as quick. Still well done and congrats to these two Lankies. Failure rewarded.
To be fair there are other names in the new 50 overs squad, including Tom Hartley and Phil Salt both Lancashire. Oh and another megga underperformer, Sam Curran. But surely he's not Lancashire is he?
And Malan who was one of the relatively better performers is 'dropped'. Must be a niggle to one and all
So congrats to all. That's Lanky 4 and Yorkshire 1 with Harry Brook being our very own squad member.
And 'rested' has different connotations depending on the profession. For actors resting means out of work. For cricketers resting means playing plenty of golf but certainly not resting

I have just read the BBC report of Key's 'admission' that the faults were of his making.
What a piece of tripe. If the errors etc. as described by him, were his and his alone, then there is only one proper action instant P.45 and no golden goodbye.
Instead of course he says he will continue and selects squads that repay failure in large parts. He says that the adversity etc. (brought on by Key) will be the "making of the Mott/Buttler partnership" .. if not we will move on .. where to or to whom I hear you ask.
Poor-ish though the Windies are at the moment I can see a couple of drubbings coming up.
Ye Gods I hope that Harry doesn't end up getting the Malan/Root/ Bairstow/ and others treatment or the special Willey treatment- obviously Willey didn't prove Key wrong despite his efforts.

I must admit , if it's not clear by now, that I've not really enjoyed the Cricket World Cup in India. Whether that's because England have performed embarrassingly badly or because the competition has been dragged out over what seems to me months.
I was hoping for something 'bright' to get us through the first part of the UK Winter break.
I don't watch but I do listen to games and I'm now looking forward to the Windies games with new enthusiasm, just us against them .

There haven't been many really good games in this iteration, unlike the 2019 one in the UK where the ICC mandated used pitches meant for some tense fixtures in the second half of the thing. Here, we've had some sweltering massacres and one incredible performance from Glenn Maxwell.

The World Cup went so badly for England that it's very difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff at the moment in terms of putting your finger on what exactly went wrong.
Key coming out and taking the blame for all and sundry somehow covers up the fact that Key actually is to blame for quite a lot of it. Watching the England players making such a fuss of David Willey was just a little bit sickening to be honest.
I truly felt a number of them were ashamed of the way they had carved up the England contracts between them.
Would Willey have been given a contract if he still played for Yorkshire! We will never know, Northants are in no position to kick up a stink about it.

Yes, clearly its all Malan and Willey's fault as the 2 who have been dropped or not had a central contract offered.
Meanwhile Livingstone, Moeen, Curran and co get to have a few weeks in the Carribbean sunshine in a fairly meaningless series against a side not even good enough to make the top 10 qualifying for the World Cup.

Brook drops out of the Big Bash "to manage his workload"
Hardly surprising given that he's Yorkshire sole inclusion in the ODI squad for the Windies.
Hope he gets chance to make his mark and enjoy his cricket before it all becomes too much and fatigue sets in a la Root , Bairstow etc etc
