I don't have the depth of understanding of other members to analyse this and that to look for answers as to how we can pull an iron out of the fire. I know performances so far have been bad and with very few positives to take away.
I believe however that England can win this game , partly because every other team , including India, will have seen England for what they are , 'yesterday's men', Obviously England are not really going to progress in this competition so what are they now playing for ? Pride!
If they have a modicum of pride left than now is the time to come away from this competition with some left and perhaps not all careers in shreds
Oh and one final thing that the England team can do is search out the longsuffering and seriously out-of-pocket supporters and say to them " Without you, we would have been much worse"

I'd like to see them beat India but I just don't think the players we have can pull it off. Bairstow, Buttler, Ali, Livingstone, Stokes and even Root look so out of form it's not funny.
It's the hope that gets you though, and while it's still possible, it's still possible.

I'm not sure who commentates on Sky or who with the highlights on ch5
However, happy 49th birthday to Michael Vaughan, if you are out there in the heat take care in the sunshine. In fact you lot should be wearing factor 50.

Same England team as last time and Buttler has reverted to fielding first having won the toss.

I'm unimpressed with the selection and decision. Maybe I'll be eating these words in a few hours, but it just feels like arrogance and refusing to learn from mistakes.

There's a lot of talk about Stokes unbalancing the side, but an easy solution would be for Buttler to take one for the team and drop himself. Let Stokes captain for a one off and bring Brook back in. Buttler has the lowest average of the top order (95 @ 19 in 5 games).

81-3 at the moment. I don't think the power play could have gone much better. Difficult pitch it seems so there's lots that can happen and 250 might be a good score.
Whose going to get the middle over wickets is the question.

........ it is now
" Oh what a tangled web we weave , when first we set out to deceive"
it was a game of two halves or rather two innings , thought we were in with a chance and then our batting didn't turn up
I think you're right tbsteve , let Butler take one for the team drop himself, so we can get Brook in to make a difference and have stokes as captain bringing nowse and backbone to the role.

The bowling looked good and getting them out for 229 seemed to be a bit of an improvement. It went downhill very quickly and we should have got a lot closer. I'm not sure if I'm more disappointed with those who threw their wickets away, or those who just couldn't keep out a straight ball.
Sky are saying we are not technically out yet, I think they are desperate to keep a few viewers for the rest of the tournament.

Newby, if I might paraphrase Michael O'Leary of Ryanair
" How can you tell when the Sky commentator is lying?"
" When he opens his mouth"

They are all clutching at straws, even Jonathan Agnew repeated it. It would require either Australia or New Zealand not to get another point from their remaining 3 games.
I think we already have our semi finalists in India, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia.
Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan can legitimately say they can make it, perhaps even the Netherlands. I think Bangladesh and ourselves are fighting for the wooden spoon.
Top 7, plus Pakistan, qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. We look a long way short of reaching that.

They complained about not enough 50-over cricket. That problem will be solved when they have to play in the qualifying tournament for the next one.
They need to get rid of all the over thirties, except two. It probably doesn't matter which two. Start again, with a bunch of players from Pope and Brook, down to Rehan and Rew...not necessarily those two, but try to get an even spread between 18 or 19 and 30, and that way you can build a self=perpetuating team.
It is not lack of talent, it is rubbish attitudes and limp leadership that have caused this downfall. The Test team is better led, and has refreshed to a degree, but there is no room for complacency here, either.

No qualifying for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, this is it. Top 8 in this competition qualify, presuming that includes the host Pakistan, if not the top 7 plus Pakistan.
Poor old West Indies don't even get a sniff.
So there is something to play for in the remaining 3 games, which will be the new message from those trying to keep us interested.
Given that scenario, England should play Brook, Atkinson, Curran and probably Carse too in the remaining games as it might be considered important for them to try and qualify. Stokes, Ali, Root, Malan, Bairstow, Wood, Willey perhaps not so much. Though some of them will have to play to balance the team.

There are always recriminations when things don't go well. The age thing is a point in question. Australia, India and South Africa all seem to have players who have been around a long time. I think England's problem is there are too many players to choose from, hence the muddled roles in different formats. Australia have far less choice, so just pick their best players, they probably won't win it but they are never that far away.
