Bess continues to bat at 3 for the Southern rocks in the 4 day game. The games are first class but most of the other players I have never heard of. He does though play in the same team as Eddie Byrom, formerly with Somerset.
Bess scored 70 from 408 for the rocks, including a good 2nd wicket stand with Byrom in their current game.
I wouldn't stick him in as high as 3 but the experience won't be doing him any harm. Has he considered trying to keep wicket I wonder.

I think he might have a bit of competition as most cricketers have more than one string to their bows nowadays . I've said this before but that won't stop me saying it again, Bess finished last season playing very well both with bat and ball especially after a bit of a fractious season , going out on loan twice. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say I think his loans were driven by the boy himself. He has had, as far as I can tell, a pretty productive off-season in Zimbabwe, particularly with the bat. I've always liked his batting particularly his own baz-ball style when quick runs or just runs are needed to pull the team back on course. newby not as high as 3. His fielding is also exemplary I'm sure he would welcome the opportunity to bat higher up for Yorkshire, particularly as Malan is not available for red-ball games but I agree, newby , not as high as three. I think his all-round ability makes him (for me) a key part of our promotion push , particularly as Darren Gough was somewhat downbeat at the EGM in relation to the funds available for this year's recruitment. Maybe it is time to appoint a vice-captain, I've previously suggested Hill , if not him then why not Bess?

Meanwhile:
In Western Australia James Wharton was run out for 13 in Wanneroo's paltry 108 all out. The opposition, Midland-Guilford are currently 135/4 in a game that concludes next weekend.
In Queensland Matthew Revis followed up his 28 out of 337 for Gold Coast last weekend by taking 3 for 78 as his team beat Valley by 45 runs. Mark Steketee took 4 for 61 for a strong looking Valley team. (Cameron Boyce, Ben McDermott and a few others from the Big Bash played in this one)
Dom Leech and his team don't appear to have a fixture this weekend. They aren't involved in the final stages of the local One day Cup.
In New Zealand George Hill too 2 wickets for 8 runs in 9 overs to restrict Darfield to 102. He then scored 23 out of 104/4 for Weedon to help then win.

A better day for James Wharton on Saturday in WA, he scored 55 not out in Wanneroo's 172/2
Midland-Guilford didn't bat again, I can't work out why, but their 135/4 was enough to beat Wanneroo's 108 all out and 172/2. Scoring system more Jerry Lewis than Duckworth Lewis.
In Queensland Gold Coast are taking on Northern Suburbs in a game over two weekends. Northern Suburbs ended up on 215/8. Matthew Revis 1 for 60 from 12 overs. TBC.
In SA Woodville are involved in the Barry Jarman shield over two weekends against Kensington. Woodville made 133 all out, a handy 22 from Dom Leech. Kensington are currently 82/5, 1 for 36 from 11 overs by Dom L.
In Christchurch, George Hill's Weedons Premier had a bye this weekend

More grief for James Wharton's team Wanneroo in Western Australia. In a game against South Perth, Wanneroo were 102 all out, 13 for James Wharton. South Perth finished on 139/6 and the game will be completed next weekend.
In Queensland Northern Suburbs built on their 215/8 and ended up on 386/8, Matthew Revis 1 for 88. Gold Coast then scored 215/4 from 40 overs, Matthew Revis made 8 and the game ended in a draw.
Dom Leech and his Woodville team don't seem to have played.
In Christchurch, Weedon's Premier were playing T20 against Southbridge Hotel. Weedons made 111/9 with George Hill opening the batting and scoring 5 runs. Southbridge won with 4 balls to spare making 113/6. George Hill 2 for 22 from 4 overs.
A couple of other players active, Shan Masood and Dawid Malan in the PSL.

Thanks again Newby. Hope this is very standard cricket as there were no real successes there.

I don't know what other cricket related activities the lads get up to, but in terms of match practice it's a very light load indeed compared to the hectic nature of a CC season. I imagine they are doing the normal strength and conditions stuff, nets etc that they would be doing at home, but with the added attraction of being able to do it outside.
Several well known, or at least players I have heard of, both in the Gold Coast team and the other Queensland premier teams in terms of Matthew Revis.
I'm not so familiar with the names of the players in Western or South Australia. It will be a bit like the Yorkshire Premier I should imagine.
Most teams having a few players who might and in time may make the jump up to higher honours, an overseas player and otherwise good solid cricketers.
Touch wood they all come back better cricketers and more rounded personalities.
I have high hopes it might be the making of Dom Leech, but that's purely based on a gut feeling and what I'd like to see, nothing more.

A brief last visit to Australia, Surely the lads will be winging their way back to the UK in time to catch up with their loved ones, friends and washing before flying off for Yorkshire's pre season in the UAE.
In the 2nd week-end of their game Wanneroo were well beaten by South Perth. James Wharton followed up his 13 last week with a duck on Saturday. Let's draw a veil over his winter in Western Australia.
In Queensland only 64 overs played in which Western Suburbs scored 138/8. 3-47 from 18 for Matthew Revis for his Gold coast team. Match due to finish on the 2nd of March. 12 named in the squad and during the Big Bash they had players who did one weekend and not the other. He'd be cutting it fine if MR stayed that long.
Dom Leech not in the Woodville team. Being a fast bowler he will need some rest.
Can't find anything for George Hill either.

I think Hill has been in New Zealand in Christchurch, playing for Weedons Club , apparently introduced by his former school master, Martin Speight, who regularly spent his own winters in that part of the world during his own playing career.
His spell in New Zealand has been T20 dominant as George is hoping this can pave the way for him to break into Yorkshire's Vitality Blast team this Summer.
In seven T20's, five of which Weedons have won to put them on course for silverware Hill has posted scores of 84, 53 not out and 38 added to his 11 wickets, including four two-wicket hauls and a best 3-21.

Hill flies back to the UK later this week from New Zealand according to Yorkshire's OS. Early next week he flies out with the Yorkshire squad to Abu Dhabi for 10 days in which time they'll have 3 days playing T20's (other teams, Essex, Somerset and Warwickshire), then red-ball cricket for 2days v Warwickshire.
From the article I read earlier Hill sounded bullish both about his own form and that of Yorkshire, based upon the team's performances in September, speaking confidently about promotion prospects and white-ball too..

My one fear for Hill, and for Bean, is that they will increasingly play in a Bazball style, because that's the way to get selected. They are both naturally gifted stroke players, who really don't need to play this way. But who can blame them?
I don't envy the captain / coach having to sort out a batting order in a team where so many bowlers are accomplished batsmen. It's a nice problem to have, in one way, but not easy to keep all the players happy.
Hill, Revis, Thompson, Bess, Milnes + Tattersall / Duke. They can't all bat in the top six.
